Pope Leo XIV Battles Lung Cancer Diagnosis and Surgery

This week the Holy See Press Office announced that Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma after thoracic surgery at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli University Policlinic, and the Catholic Church began a period of profound medical and institutional vigilance.

The 71-year-old pontiff underwent the scheduled surgical intervention on Tuesday afternoon after preoperative diagnostic scans identified a suspicious lesion in the lower lobe of his right lung.

In a detailed joint medical bulletin issued by Dr. Luigi Carbone, Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of the Vatican City State, and Professor Stefano Margaritora, Director of the Thoracic Surgery Unit at Gemelli Hospital, Vatican authorities sought to balance transparency with reassurance, confirming the malignancy while emphasizing that the operation proceeded without complications. Pope Leo XIV lung cancer.

Inside the 90-Minute Procedure at Gemelli

According to the official Vatican statement, Pope Leo XIV spent approximately three hours inside the surgical suite at Gemelli Hospital, often referred to by Italian media as the Vatican Three due to its dedicated tenth-floor papal wing. The active surgical intervention itself lasted roughly 90 minutes.

To ensure a radical resection, the lower lobe of the right lung was removed using a video-assisted technique, the medical bulletin stated. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is a minimally invasive procedure that lets thoracic surgeons remove diseased lung tissue through small incisions between the ribs with a specialized high-definition camera and precision surgical instruments. This approach avoids the trauma of a traditional open thoracotomy and supports better recovery.

Professor Margaritora led the surgical team inside the operating theater, assisted by fellow thoracic specialists Professor Elisa Meacci, Dr. Maria Teresa Congedo, and Dr. Leonardo Petracca Ciavarella. The complex anesthesia protocol required for single-lung ventilation during the resection was managed by a team headed by Professor Massimo Antonelli, alongside Dr. Giovanni Punzo and Dr. Giuseppe Bello.

During the procedure, pathologists performed an immediate analysis of the excised tissue. “An intraoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, as suspected from the preoperative examinations,” the doctors confirmed.

Following the completion of the lobectomy and a brief period of post-anesthesia observation, Pope Leo XIV awoke normally and was transferred back to his private apartment on the hospital’s tenth floor. By Wednesday morning, Vatican sources reported that the pontiff had passed a tranquil night, was breathing independently without mechanical support, had begun walking short distances with assistance, and was eating solid food normally.

Understanding Lung Adenocarcinoma and the Crucial Lymph Node Tests

While the immediate surgical outcome has been hailed by the Pope’s medical team as a complete success, oncologists note that the long-term trajectory of Pope Leo XIV’s health hinges on comprehensive histological and molecular testing underway in Gemelli’s pathology laboratories.

Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common subtype of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), accounting for more than 30 percent of all lung cancer diagnoses globally and roughly half of all non-small cell cases. The malignancy originates in the glandular epithelial cells that line the alveoli—the microscopic air sacs located in the outer periphery of the lungs responsible for oxygen exchange—and produce mucus and other protective fluids. Unlike squamous cell or small cell lung carcinomas, which are overwhelmingly linked to heavy tobacco use, adenocarcinoma frequently occurs in non-smokers or former light smokers and often develops slowly in the outer margins of the lung before triggering noticeable respiratory symptoms.

The human right lung is divided into three lobes: upper, middle, and lower. The right lung has three lobes, unlike the left which has two, so removing the right lower lobe generally leaves about 75 to 80 percent of total pulmonary capacity. With the minimally invasive video-assisted approach used by Professor Margaritora’s team, patients in robust baseline health often regain near-normal daily stamina within a few weeks.

However, the decisive clinical factor is staging.

Additionally, during a radical lobectomy for lung cancer, surgeons dissect the regional mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes.

Thereafter, pathologists examine those nodes microscopically to determine whether malignant cells have migrated beyond the primary tumor site.

Independent thoracic oncologists observed that if all extracted lymph nodes test negative, the disease is Stage I.

Moreover, surgical resection alone is often curative, carrying a highly favorable five-year survival prognosis without aggressive systemic chemotherapy.

However, if microscopic spread is detected in the lymph nodes, the Pope’s team will likely sequence the tumor tissue.

They will check for specific genetic mutations such as EGFR or ALK biomarkers.

Those results would determine whether Pope Leo XIV needs targeted therapies, immunotherapy, or traditional adjuvant chemotherapy.

As of Wednesday evening, the Vatican had not yet released the final pathology findings regarding lymph node involvement.

Governance of the Holy See and Global Reaction

In response to the surgery, the Prefecture of the Papal Household formally canceled all of Pope Leo XIV’s public and private audiences through at least October 20, aligning with the medical team’s projection of a seven-day inpatient hospital stay. Wednesday’s General Audience in St. Peter’s Square was suspended, though thousands of faithful still gathered beneath the colonnades of Bernini to recite the Rosary for the pontiff’s recovery.

Under the apostolic constitution Praedicate Evangelium, the daily governance of the Roman Curia continues.

Moreover, standard canon law provisions maintain uninterrupted operation during a papal hospitalization.

Senior officials within the Secretariat of State maintain daily contact with the Pope’s personal secretaries at Gemelli Hospital.

Additionally, they forward only urgent diplomatic dispatches and ecclesiastical decrees that require the sovereign pontiff’s personal signature.

News of the cancer diagnosis triggered an immediate wave of diplomatic and interfaith solidarity across the globe. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first major world leaders to issue a public message on Wednesday, extending prayers and best wishes on behalf of the people of India for Pope Leo XIV’s rapid and complete recovery. Similar messages of support arrived from European heads of state, Latin American bishops’ conferences, and senior Orthodox, Protestant, Jewish, and Islamic leaders.

Outside the main entrance of Gemelli Hospital in northern Rome, where a bronze statue of Pope John Paul II stands watch over the courtyard, dozens of international broadcast crews set up live transmission positions alongside local Roman citizens leaving flowers and handwritten notes. The Holy See Press Office indicated that further medical bulletins will be issued over the next 48 to 72 hours as the definitive histopathological results are finalized.
